Parish at a Glance

You are the Light of the World. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Let your light shine before men that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in Heaven”
Matthew 5: 14, 16

Our mission is to bring Glory to God.

Our Heritage
“Mar Thoma Church is an autonomous, indigenous, Episcopal and Evangelical Church founded in 52 AD by St. Thomas, one of the Apostles of Jesus Christ”*.
Thomas the Apostle was prepared to die with Jesus, but later, refused to believe in the risen Christ, until he touched His wounds. History and tradition provide substantial evidence that he traveled to India, converted Brahmins in Malabar Coast, Kerala, in to Christian faith and suffered martyrdom in 72 AD at Mylapore, Madras.  The St. Thomas Christians (the Mar Thomites)  trace their ancestry to the first Syrian Christian Church on Malabar coast. The Canadian Mar Thoma Church, Toronto had its origin as a worshiping group in 1972.  This small group started worshiping in the Trinity College, of The university of Toronto.

In 1973 the late Most Rev..Dr Alexander Mar Thoma Metropolitan visited Toronto and advised  the group to attend worship services and have communion with the local Anglican church.
In 1975 Rev. C I George (now Rt. Rev. Geevarghese Mar Athanasius) who came as a theological student, took leadership of this worshiping group.
In 1976 the Late Rt. Rev. Easow Mar Timotheos joined Wycliffe College for higher Studies and started giving Pastoral care to this group. His direction and guidance encouraged this small group to go forward.
In 1978 Rev. Iype Joseph joined the Mc Cormic Theological Seminary as a student and was given charge of this worship group. He started Holy Communion service here once a month.
On May 1st 1978, Rt..Rev Philipose Mar Crysostom, the then Diocesan Bishop elevated this worshiping group as a Mar Thoma Congregation.
In 1981 the late Rt. Rev Dr. Thomas Mar Athanasius Suffragan Metropolitan exalted this Congregation to the status of a Parish and named it The Canadian Mar Thoma Church, Toronto.
On Oct. 31st, 1983 the congregation was registered under the Corporations Act (Ontario) as a Charitable Religious Organization.

We bought a church at 313 Main St., Markham North in July 1987 and the late Most Rev. Dr. Alexander Mar Thoma Metropolitan dedicated the Church building on July 25th 1987.

We saw a steady growth in memberships in the subsequent years. Currently we are blessed with the strength of 250 families. Also we have six active prayer groups and seven vibrant organizations which strengthen the parish and all other activities of the Church as a whole.
We purchsed 2.5 Acres of land at the city of Whitchurch-Stoufville in the year 2015 and built a church with modern facilities , which have a seating capacity of over 800 people . Our new facility is equipted with Seniors Recreational room , Youth room , Choir preperatory room and a Board room . Parsonage is also attached to the new church .
